Transport
to Fethiye:
There
are two regional airports near Fethiye, airport Dalaman and
airport Antalya. Dalaman is within 55km distance (± 45
minutes) from Fethiye and Antalya is within 255km distance (±3
hours) from Fethiye. In 2006 airport Dalaman was opened for
international air traffic as well. Some Brithish charter companies
operate in the winter season with cheap flight fares.
There is a big cross
road in Fethiye that leads to 2 big cities ( Mugla , Antalya
), the town centre and the famous lagoon Ölüdeniz
. The traffic in Fethiye is a little chaotic though. Most locals
do not pay attention to traffic rules....
u
DOLMUS (mini bus;
pronunciation "dolmush"): this is the local, most
used public transport system in Turkey. Literally translated
it means "full" and practically it is often full.
These busses have fix routes and no matter where you are, every
15 minutes you will see one driving along. You can recognize
them by their destination signs. By waving your hand to the
driver you can make him stop. In every dolmush there are 10
to 12 seats and a price list. Small change to pay for the ride
is recommended. To get out you just have to shout 'STOP'. It
is fun to use a dolmus and a cheap way to travel. The gathering
point of these busses in Fethiye is in the centre, between the
streets: Atatürk Caddesi and Sedir Sokak (behind the white
mosque).
u
TAXI: the taxis in Turkey are colored yellow. You can always
wave to the driver to make him stop. Of course you can get in
at a taxi stand or just order a taxi as well. There are 2 taxi
stands in the centre of Fethiye. Most taxis have a taxi meter.
That means that you pay the price which is shown on the meter.
Pay good attention to the meter though! If the taxi does not
have a meter or if the meter is out of order, negotiate about
the price before and not during or after the trip! For a longer
distance it is wise to agree on a price with the driver before,
for the prices determined by the taxi cooperation are often
applied. After mid night night fees apply.
u
BUS: at the big cross road heading towards Mugla, Antalya and
Ölüdeniz, behind the petrol station you will find
the big bus station, the so called 'otogar'. The intercity busses
arrive and leave from this bus station and there is a huge variety
of fix services from and to all big cities in Turkey. The better
companies drive in the newest busses, provided by comfort which
is necessary for longer trips (aircon, reading lights, drinks,
refreshing tissues, TV and toilet). There are a lot of different
bus companies at the otogar where you can buy your ticket. Compared
to most European countries the bus in Turkey is a cheap and
comfortable way for travelling.
After Iskendurun,
Mersin, Antalya and Kusadasi, Fethiye stands on the 5th place
as the biggest harbour city in Turkey and provides comfort for
those who come by boat. In 2002 a new and modern yacht marina
was built in the harbour of Fethiye with occupational capacity
for ±300 yachts/gullets and lots of facilities.
